Notes
Build a knowledge base for your world with wikilinks and a graph view.
Overview
The Notes view is Braidr's built-in knowledge base. Use it for world-building, character bios, location descriptions, magic systems, historical timelines — anything that supports your novel but isn't a scene.
Notes are organized in folders, linked with wikilinks, and visualized in a graph view that shows how everything connects.
Creating notes
In the Notes view, click + New Note or press ⌘N to create a new note. Give it a title and start writing.
Notes support the same rich text formatting as the Editor — bold, italic, headings, lists, and more.
Folders
Organize your notes into folders for easy browsing. Common folder structures include:
- Characters — bios, backstories, relationships
- Locations — maps, descriptions, history
- World — magic systems, politics, religions
- Research — historical references, technical details
- Planning — themes, plot outlines, revision notes
Create folders from the sidebar, and drag notes between folders to reorganize.
Wikilinks
Link notes to each other using wikilinks. Type [[ and start typing a note name — Braidr shows an autocomplete dropdown of matching notes.
For example, typing [[Middle Earth]] creates a clickable link to your “Middle Earth” note. If the note doesn't exist yet, the link appears in a different color — click it to create the note.
💡 Tip
Backlinks
Every note has a Backlinks panel at the bottom (or in the sidebar) that shows all other notes linking to this note. This lets you discover connections you might not have realized.
For example, if you open the “Magic System” note, the backlinks panel might show references from “Gandalf Bio”, “The Shire”, and “Plot Outline” — every note that mentions your magic system.
Graph view
The Graph View visualizes all your notes as a node graph. Each note is a node, and each wikilink is an edge connecting two nodes.
- Nodes are sized by the number of connections (more links = larger node).
- Click a node to open that note.
- Zoom and pan to explore your world's structure.
- Notes in the same folder share a color.
The graph view is useful for spotting orphaned notes (unlinked), heavily connected hubs (important concepts), and clusters of related information.
ℹ️ Info
Note storage
Notes are stored as HTML files in your project's notes/directory, with a notes-index.json file that tracks titles, folders, and metadata.
See File Format for the full specification.
