Scene Management

Add, edit, move, connect, and manage the status of your scenes.

Adding scenes

You can add scenes in several ways:

  • POV View — click + Add Scene at the bottom of any section, or right-click to insert between scenes.
  • Braided View — new scenes appear in the “To Braid” sidebar until you drag them into the reading order.
  • Keyboard — press N to add a scene in the current context.

Every new scene gets a title, a scene number (within its character's POV), and a default status of “Outline.”

Editing scene details

Click a scene card in the POV View to expand it and edit:

  • Title — click the title text to edit inline.
  • Description — a short summary that appears on the collapsed card.
  • Synopsis — a longer narrative beat description.
  • Tags — add or remove tags. See Tags & Metadata.
  • Custom metadata — fill in any custom fields you've defined.

Duplicating scenes

Right-click a scene and select Duplicate to create a copy. The duplicate gets a new scene number and is placed immediately after the original. Useful for creating variations of a scene to decide which works better.

Moving scenes

Scenes can be moved in multiple ways:

  • Drag and drop — grab the grip handle and drag within or between sections (POV View) or up/down in reading order (Braided View).
  • Arrow keys — select a scene and use / to move it up or down.

ℹ️ Info

Moving a scene in the POV View changes its scene number within that character's arc. Moving a scene in the Braided View changes its position in reading order but keeps its POV scene number.

Scene connections

Connections let you link related scenes across different POV characters. For example, if Frodo's Scene 5 and Aragorn's Scene 3 describe the same event from different perspectives, you can connect them.

To create a connection:

  1. Expand a scene card in the POV View.
  2. Click + Connect.
  3. Search for or select the scene you want to link to. You can link to any scene in any character's POV.

Connected scenes show a link icon. In the Braided View's Rails mode, connections appear as lines between the linked scenes across columns.

Scene status

Every scene has a status that tracks your writing progress:

StatusMeaningColor
OutlinePlanned but not yet writtenGray
DraftFirst draft writtenBlue
RevisedHas been revised at least onceAmber
FinalDone, ready for compileGreen

Set the status from the scene card's properties panel or from the Properties panel in the Editor. You can filter views by status to focus on scenes that still need work.

Archiving and deleting scenes

  • Archive (right-click → Archive) — removes the scene from all views but keeps it stored. You can restore archived scenes from the Archive panel.
  • Delete (right-click → Delete) — permanently removes the scene. A confirmation dialog will ask you to confirm. Deleted scenes cannot be recovered (unless you use git or have a backup).

⚠️ Note

Deleting a scene is permanent. If you're unsure, use Archive instead — you can always restore it later.
